About

About Dr. Giovanni Mauri

First of all, don't panic. Surgery is often an excellent treatment, but it is not always the only option.

My role is to carefully evaluate your specific case and help you understand all available alternatives. In many thyroid conditions, minimally invasive treatments can offer excellent results while preserving thyroid function, reducing recovery time, and minimizing the risk of complications.

The most important thing is not choosing the newest treatment or the most aggressive one - it is choosing the treatment that is best for you. Together, we can review all the options and find the approach that combines effectiveness, safety, and the highest possible quality of life.

“Treat effectively. Harm minimally. Care deeply.”

My journey into medicine began in childhood. My father was a highly respected physician who dedicated his life to caring for his patients, often putting their needs before his own. Watching him work inspired me from an early age and gave me a clear sense of purpose: I wanted to become a doctor and make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

During my medical training, I discovered Interventional Radiology and was immediately fascinated by its philosophy. It offered the possibility of treating disease effectively while minimizing the physical and emotional burden on patients. While many physicians are naturally drawn to achieving the best technical results or advancing scientific metrics, what attracted me most was the opportunity to improve patients’ overall well-being through less invasive treatments.

This vision became even stronger when I entered the field of image-guided thermal ablation. I quickly realized that many talented physicians were performing remarkable procedures, but that the field still lacked standardization, strong scientific evidence, and widespread dissemination of knowledge. At that point, I was fortunate to meet a mentor who instilled in me a true passion for research, education, and innovation. From then on, I dedicated my career not only to treating patients but also to advancing the science behind minimally invasive therapies and helping share knowledge with colleagues around the world.

Today, my professional life is built on three pillars: patient care, research, and education. Among them, patient care remains the most important. Every scientific project, publication, or guideline ultimately has the same goal: improving the lives of the people who trust us with their health.

I strongly believe that medicine is not only about treating a disease, but also about understanding the person behind it. For this reason, I strive to build an empathetic and honest relationship with every patient, listening carefully to their concerns and helping them make informed decisions. Every patient is unique, and each deserves the same attention, respect, and dedication that inspired me to become a physician in the first place.

Treatment

Procedures performed

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA)

The most widely studied thermal method for benign and toxic nodules.

Microwave ablation (MWA)

Heats faster and works well near blood flow, often used for larger nodules.

Ethanol ablation (PEI)

A targeted chemical injection that collapses cystic and select nodules without heat.

Laser ablation (LA)

A very thin fiber suited to smaller nodules or ones near delicate structures.

Indications

Conditions treated

Autonomously functioning nodules (AFTN)

Overactive nodules that make excess thyroid hormone, a common cause of hyperthyroidism.
