Canyon vs ECO vs Baird vs Vison: Who Really Leads Thyroid MWA?

The answer changes depending on what is measured: device-specific clinical evidence, commercial scale, thyroid-market specialization or international visibility.

Canyon may be the true leader in thyroid microwave ablation—but only when leadership is defined by identifiable device-specific clinical evidence.
Executive answer

There is no single MWA leader across every meaningful category.

Canyon has the strongest identifiable device-specific thyroid evidence. ECO appears to lead the broader Chinese MWA market in the cited 2022 data. Baird leads the cited thyroid-focused commercial segment in China. Vison is a major manufacturer that has received too little attention in thyroid-ablation analysis.

Clinical evidence

Canyon Medical, based on its randomized multicenter comparison with STARMED RFA and broader named-device thyroid literature.

Commercial scale

ECO Medical, based on the overall Chinese MWA market ranking cited in public securities filings.

Thyroid market focus

Baird Medical, based on its cited thyroid-nodule segment position and concentrated thyroid commercialization strategy.

Underrecognized scale

Vison Medical, which ranked second overall in the cited China data and has emerging large-nodule evidence.

The clinical principle remains unchangedManufacturer leadership does not determine patient outcome. An experienced ECO or Baird operator is preferable to an inexperienced Canyon purchaser. Ultrasound skill, case selection, margin control and complication management remain more important than the name on the generator.

MWA clinical-evidence leader

Canyon Medical

Evidence rank: 1

Canyon’s strongest claim is the quality of the thyroid-specific evidence associated with its legacy KY-2000 platform—not the size of its marketing presence.

The most important study is a prospective, randomized, open-label, five-center trial comparing Canyon MWA with STARMED RFA in 152 patients with predominantly solid benign thyroid nodules. At two years, MWA was noninferior to RFA for volume reduction. Technique efficacy was reported as 91% for MWA and 86% for RFA.1

The trial also requires caution. All operators had more than ten years of thermal-ablation experience. Voice change occurred in 6.6% of MWA patients and 1.3% of RFA patients; all recovered within three months, but the study was not large enough to establish equivalent safety. The trial was supported by Canyon and public research grants.1

Canyon’s named systems also appear across substantial benign-nodule and thyroid-cancer literature, including large cohorts and long-term follow-up.2 The current MaxBlate line includes KY-2000A and KY-2100A generators and ThyTip antennas, but physicians should distinguish current configurations from the legacy KY-2000 equipment used in much of the literature.3

The current Canyon generators received U.S. FDA clearance in 2024 for general soft-tissue microwave ablation—not an explicit benign-thyroid-nodule indication.4

Why Canyon leads on evidence

  • Randomized multicenter head-to-head study
  • Named-device benign and cancer literature
  • Longer identifiable thyroid research history
  • Fine thyroid-oriented antennas

What remains unresolved

  • Safety equivalence for new operators
  • Continuity between legacy and current systems
  • Current global installed base
  • Thyroid-specific U.S. indication
RFAMD verdictCanyon should be the first MWA company examined when published thyroid-specific evidence is the primary procurement criterion.
E
Commercial-scale leader

ECO Medical

Scale rank: 1

ECO appears to be the most commercially established of the major Chinese MWA manufacturers in the available market data.

Frost & Sullivan data cited in Baird’s securities filing ranked ECO first in China’s overall MWA market by 2022 sales revenue, followed by Vison, Baird and Canyon. The data are historical, China-specific and company-commissioned, but they confirm that ECO is a major platform rather than a peripheral supplier.5

ECO also has meaningful named-device thyroid evidence. A study of 208 predominantly solid benign nodules compared STARMED RFA with an ECO MWA generator and ECO1007 antenna. Overall 12-month outcomes were comparable; MWA required less treatment time and energy. In nodules at least 3.5 cm, MWA achieved a higher 12-month volume-reduction rate in that cohort.6

Strengths

  • Established manufacturing scale
  • Broad international activity
  • Named-device comparative evidence
  • Potential efficiency in larger nodules

Limitations

  • Global thyroid volumes are not public
  • Training quality varies by distributor
  • Product naming can be difficult to track
  • No universal evidence of superiority
RFAMD verdictECO is the best-supported candidate for commercial-scale leadership among the Chinese MWA companies reviewed.
B
Thyroid commercialization leader

Baird Medical

Thyroid-market rank: 1

Baird has built the clearest thyroid-specific commercial identity among the major Chinese MWA manufacturers.

Baird’s public reporting states that the company ranked first in China in the thyroid-nodule and breast-lump segment by 2022 sales revenue and microwave-needle volume. In the same cited data, Baird ranked third in the overall Chinese MWA market, behind ECO and Vison.5

The BD-GT system received U.S. FDA 510(k) clearance in November 2023 for general soft-tissue microwave ablation. The clearance is not an explicit benign-thyroid-nodule indication.7

Baird’s strengths are concentrated thyroid branding, fine-gauge probes, expanding physician education and aggressive international distribution. Its principal limitation is that international marketing visibility currently exceeds the volume of independently visible, device-specific comparative thyroid evidence.

Strengths

  • Clear thyroid-specific commercial strategy
  • Strong cited China thyroid segment
  • Fine thyroid-oriented probes
  • Active international expansion

Limitations

  • Less independent comparative evidence
  • General soft-tissue U.S. clearance
  • Leadership data are historical and China-specific
  • Training visibility is not outcome evidence
RFAMD verdictBaird leads the thyroid-commercialization conversation, but it does not currently displace Canyon as the clinical-evidence leader.
V
Underrecognized major competitor

Vison Medical

Overall China rank: 2

Vison is the manufacturer most likely to be overlooked in Western thyroid-ablation discussions.

Vison ranked second in China’s overall MWA market in the 2022 market research cited by Baird—above both Baird and Canyon.5 A recent retrospective study of 205 patients with benign nodules measuring at least 4 cm used Vison’s MTC-3C system and reported a mean volume-reduction rate of 82.54% and technical efficacy of 93.66%. One patient developed transient hoarseness that resolved within one month.8

Vison also designed the SurBlate system, cleared in the United States through MIMA-Pro for general soft-tissue microwave ablation.9

Strengths

  • Large cited commercial position
  • Recent evidence in very large nodules
  • Broader interventional-oncology experience
  • U.S.-cleared general soft-tissue platform

Limitations

  • Less thyroid-specific global branding
  • Fewer high-quality comparisons than Canyon
  • Less visible thyroid training infrastructure
  • No thyroid-specific U.S. indication identified
RFAMD verdictVison deserves inclusion in any serious MWA procurement comparison, particularly for centers expecting a large-nodule case mix.
Beyond the four

Other MWA platforms physicians should know

Biomedical / Terumo TATO

A dedicated European microwave platform with fine thyroid antennas and Terumo distribution across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. It remains important where European hospital procurement, service and clinical networks are decisive.10

HS AMICA

An established European multi-organ RF/MW platform with published thyroid use. It is relevant particularly where interventional-radiology programs prefer one broader oncology system rather than a thyroid-only commercial ecosystem.

Why they are not in the top fourThis report focuses on the companies with the strongest combination of identified thyroid evidence and cited commercial scale. Regional service may still make TATO or another platform the more rational purchase in a particular hospital.
Physician decision guide

Which MWA platform should a physician consider?

Select the priority that most closely reflects the program. The recommendation is a starting point—not a substitute for local mentorship, service and regulatory review.

Choose the primary procurement priority

Start with Canyon.
Its named platform has the strongest thyroid-specific clinical evidence identified in this review. Confirm that the current generator and antenna configuration is supported by the evidence and available locally.

Practical comparison

Platform Best reason to consider it Primary caution Best fit
Canyon Clinical evidence Legacy evidence does not automatically validate every current configuration. Evidence-led MWA program with experienced mentorship.
ECO Scale + evidence Local support and product continuity require verification. High-volume center treating large or vascular nodules.
Baird Thyroid support Independent comparative evidence remains less developed. Market where Baird training and service are strongest.
Vison Large nodules Less visible thyroid-specific international ecosystem. Interventional-oncology center with large-nodule demand.

The most evidence-supported generator is still the wrong purchase when the physician’s mentor, service network and consumable supply support a different platform.

Interpretation limits

What this ranking cannot establish

Worldwide procedure volume

No audited public registry identifies the number of thyroid procedures performed with each platform.

Intrinsic device superiority

Operator experience, case selection and technique can outweigh differences between technically capable systems.

Current-market continuity

Clinical evidence may involve older generators or antennas that differ from the products now being sold.

Do not convert a market ranking into a patient claim“No. 1” can refer to evidence, revenue, needle volume, one country, one year or one disease segment. These claims should never be presented to patients without the qualifier.
Conclusion

Is Canyon the true leader?

Yes—when the question is which manufacturer has the strongest identifiable device-specific clinical evidence in thyroid MWA.

That does not establish Canyon as the largest global supplier, the safest system for beginners or the best-supported platform in every country.

The most defensible final language is:

Canyon is the thyroid MWA clinical-evidence leader. ECO appears to lead commercial scale in the available China market data. Baird leads the cited China thyroid-specific commercial segment. Vison is a major underrecognized competitor.

MWA has matured into an established thyroid-ablation modality. But the manufacturer ranking remains secondary to the physician’s ultrasound skill, mentorship, case selection and ability to protect critical structures.

The true MWA leader for a particular patient is the platform used most competently by a physician who knows when MWA is—and is not—the correct treatment.

Methodology & references

How RFAMD assessed the market

RFAMD reviewed identifiable device-specific thyroid studies, official regulatory records, manufacturer product information and public company filings. The report separates four forms of leadership: clinical evidence, overall commercial scale, thyroid-specific commercialization and international visibility.

Editorial independence: Device manufacturers were not permitted to determine the rankings or conclusions. Company-supported research is included where clinically relevant and identified in the analysis. Commercial-market figures are historical, China-specific and derived from research cited in Baird Medical’s public filings; they are not audited current global thyroid-procedure data.
